JANET organisation of the network
JANET:
the UK Joint Academic Network
JANET links
its
users
to
the
facilities
of
over
250
institutions
in
the UK,
and
far
more worldwide.
All
universities
and
many other
higher education establishments
are
connected,
as are
many
organisations associated with academic work and research.
JANET
has
extensive links
to
International
and
other national
academic networks,
and to the
growing number
of
commercial
and public network services.
The
flow
of
local, national
and
international communication
is
normally straightforward.
Within
the
UK however, JANET
is
distinctive
for its
high speed
and
capacity
- an
exceptional test-bed
for new
services.
The
developing SuperJANET framework
-
carrying multimedia sound
and video alongside text
and
data
-
will support major changes
in
research techniques, patterns
of
collaboration, document delivery,
and access
to
new forms
of
information.
Use
of the
network
is
provided
at no
direct cost
to
staff
and
students.
It is
not
a
public network:
the
main costs
of
operation
are
met by the
major funding agencies
for
academic research
and
teaching.
JANET
is now a
multi-protocol network managed
by
UKERNA.
Most traffic
is
routed
at
10-34 Mbits/sec using Internet protocols
(TCP/IP), increasingly popular
for
Information services based
on
World-Wide-Web, Gopher
and
Z39.50. Many users
and
some
services (such
as
library OPACs) however still
use
X.25/Coloured
Book standards,
and
rely
on
local and national gateway services
to
reach
the
wider world. The JANET Information Service carries
the
text
of
Network News, directories
and
technical reports.

JANET '95 was produced
for
libraries
and
their users
in
the universities
of
the
United Kingdom. The brochure, originally printed
in
colour, was compiled
by
Peter
Stone and
funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher
Education Funding Councils
of
the UK, who finance most
of
the services
de-
scribed. It is reproduced in this issue
of
The Electronic Library
with their permis-
sion.
The focus
in
this first guide
is
intentionally
on
UK-based services
on the
JANET network: they frame
the
working context
of
its primary users. Future
publications will deal with tools, issues and subject sources
in an
Internet-wide
context A limited number of copies of this brochure are still available from UK-
OLN:

Networking,
