The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council
Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Her by section 80 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1906(a) is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:—
1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Registration of Government Ships) Order 1978 and shall come into operation on 22nd November 1978.
2. The Interpretation Act 1889(b) shall apply for the interpretation of this Order as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
3. This Order makes the following amendments:—
(1) For Article 23(v) of an Order in Council made on 22nd March 1911(c), as amended (d), relating to the registration of British ships or vessels in the service of the Ministry of Defence (provisions of the Merchant Shipping Acts not applying to Government ships in the service of the Ministry of Defence registered in pursuance of the provisions of this Order in Council) there shall be substituted:—
"(v) The Merchant Shipping (Mercantile Marine Fund) Act 1898. The whole Act other than section 3.";

(2) In Article 9 of an Order in Council made on 14th July 1921(a) relating to the registration of British ships or vessels in the service of the Board of Trade (provisions of the Merchant Shipping Acts not applying to Government ships in the service of the Board of Trade) for "Sections 3 and 5 of the Merchant Shipping (Mercantile Marine Fund) Act 1898" there shall be substituted "Section 5 of the Merchant Shipping (Mercantile Marine Fund) Act 1898.".

This Order amends an Order in Council of 1911 (Government ships in the service of the Ministry of Defence) and an Order in Council of 1921 (Government ships in the service of the Board of Trade) by applying the provisions of section 3 of the Merchant Shipping (Mercantile Marine Fund) Act 1898 (c. 44) to those Government ships.
