The Merchant Shipping (Sterling Equivalents) (Various Enactments) (No. 2) Order 1983

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 1(3) of the Merchant Shipping (Liability of Shipowners and Others) Act 1958(a), by section 1(5) of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971(b), by section 1(7) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1974(c), by section 28(4) of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977(d), by paragraph 5 of Part II of Schedule 3 to the Merchant Shipping Act 1979(e) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:—

Citation, commencement, revocation and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Sterling Equivalents) (Various Enactments) (No. 2) Order 1983 and shall come into operation on 9th May 1983.

(2) The Merchant Shipping (Sterling Equivalents) (Various Enactments) Order 1983(f) is hereby revoked.

Merchant Shipping (Liability of Shipowners and Others) Act 1958

2. For the purposes of section 1 of the Merchant Shipping (Liability of Shipowners and Others) Act 1958, £146.31 and £47.20 are hereby specified as the amounts which shall be taken as equivalent to 3,100 and 1,000 gold francs respectively.

Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971

3. For the purposes of paragraph 5 of Article IV of the Rules and of Article IV bis of the Rules set out in the Schedule to the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971, £471.96 and £1.42 are hereby specified as the amounts which shall be taken as equivalent to 10,000 gold francs and 30 gold francs respectively.

Merchant Shipping Act 1974

4.—(1) For the purposes of Part I of the Merchant Shipping Act 1974:—

(a) £21,238,393 and £42,476,785 are hereby specified as the amounts which shall be taken as equivalent to 450 million gold francs and 900 million gold francs respectively, being the amounts specified in Article 4.4 and 4.6 of the Fund Convention as set out in Schedule 1 to that Act; and £31,857,589 is hereby specified as the amount which shall be taken as equivalent to 675 million francs, being the amount substituted by a decision of the Assembly of the Fund on 20th April 1979 (pursuant to the said Article 4.6 of that Convention) for the 450...
