Abstract
Purpose This study aims to build a model about studentsbehaviouralintention (BI) to use the university
WeChat Library(WL).
Design/methodology/approach Firstly, after the unied theory of acceptanceand use of technology
model was modied, a modied theory of acceptance and use of technology (MTAUT) model is built; a
questionnairesurvey, in which 1,003 valid observations are randomly collectedfrom six universities in a city
in eastern China, is performed;and then the results of the survey are used to build the model aboutstudents
BI to use the WL basedon regression analysis.
Findings This study nds ve factors, which are information quality (IQ), effort expectancy (EE),
facilitatingconditions (FC), performance expectancy (PE) and socialinuence (SI), that constitute independent
variablesof themodel about studentsBI to use the university WL. And IQ has the greatest effect on students
BI to use the WL, followed by EE, FC, PE and SI.
Originality/value This study builds and testsa MTAUT model about studentsBIto use the university
WL.

1. Introduction
WeChat is a mobile instant messaging software application launched by Tencent, Inc. in
China at the beginning of 2011.It is used to quickly send text and photos and provides voice
communication to many people.Today, as a mobile social medium, it is part of everyday life
in China.
To use WeChat, an individual or group sets up an ofcial account on WeChats public
platform Webpage. A WeChat ofcial account is able tonot only send information but also
bundle features of other websites, which supply more personalised services. According to
the statistics, 64% of WeChat users are university students (Liu, 2012). To serve these
students, many libraries use WeChat as a service window, integrating most of libraries
functions and duties into the WeChat ofcialaccount. A librarys WeChat ofcial account is
a mobile service platform that is developed by a library based on a WeChat and realises
mobile service functions by connecting with a library management system, such as digital
resource retrieval, online public access catalogue and e-books.
Figure 1 shows the prole of a WeChat ofcial account. A WeChat ofcial account has
some special properties. Up to three menus can be built on the bottom bar; up to ve pop-up
