The following is a second brief
overview of new gadgets in the
marketplace. In preparing the first part
of this article last month I discovered so
many new and exciting gadgets that I
continued my ``hunt'' for even more
interesting and exciting products new in
the marketplace. In reviewing my initial
list again I wanted to present to our
readers additional gadgets. As I stated
previously, I think our community
should be knowledgeable about the ever
changing world of gadgets since the
technologies may appear in some form
in our libraries and our patrons might
request us to develop and provide
services to support them.
Thanko MP3 Watch
The Thanko MP3 watch (Figure 1)
comes in two variants AMP60256S
with 512MB flash memory and
AMP60512S with 256MB. In addition
to MP3 and WMA playback it can also
record sound in MP3 format. Sound
recording can be done via analog line
input in MP3 format at 128Kbps. With
the 512MB model you can record up to
520 minutes and up to 260 minutes with
the 256MB model. The watch connects
to PC via USB 1.1 and can be used as a
Mass storage device. The Lithium Ion
battery charges fully in two hours and
provides continuous playback for nine
hours. It comes bundled with ear
phones (www.thanko.jp/).
Centrix MVP-150
The Centrix MVP-150 (Figure 2)
from Sitech System is more than just a
media player. It features a humongous
4in LCD touchscreen that displays
movies, plays music, games, a voice
recorder, TV-out, views text and
graphic files, as well as access to a GPS
connection, 20GB of storage space is
included, with an SD card slot for
further expansion options. It runs on the
Windows CE platform and is tiny for its
device type at 132 71 24mm,
weighing just 280g (www.centrixclub.
com/news/n_list.php).
Wi-Fi Zvue
Also intriguing is handheld
entertainment's new ZVUE 500
portable media player, which features a
3.5in LCD screen with 320 240
resolution, a landscape video format
that can support 30fps and 1GB of
on-board flash memory. The player also
features 802.11a/b/g wireless
connectivity, which should provide
easy access to video content on your
computer and online, all for an
estimated retail price of less than $300
(www.hheld.com/) (Figure 3).
iPod Videos on TV
A prototype docking station (battery
or AC powered) for an iPod was
demonstrated at the latest Consumer
Electronics Show. Adimos showed this
wireless media streamer for the iPod,
which lets you play iPod video files on
your living room TV. The dock uses an
Adimos ADM200 wireless chip to
stream content over standard 802.11
frequencies, making it easy to watch
your podded shows on an eye-soothing
screen (www.adimos.com/) (Figure 4).
Eyebud 800
Bellevue-based eMagin Corp. has
developed a wearable headset system,
the Eyebud 800 (Figure 5), that plugs
into Apple Computer's portable media
