Online serials management
service launched
The British William Dawson Group, which
specialises in journal and periodical subscrip-
tions,
has launched a real-time service for
libraries and information centres in Britain
who purchase serials on
a
large
scale.
The ser-
vice offers check-in, claims for overdue
issues, readership and routing services,
searching facilities and holdings listings and
analyses.
The service is run on bureau lines, and
communication can be dial-up or via leased
line.
Terminal equipment can be standard
vdus and matrix printers using ASCII proto-
cols.
Charging
is
per
title
check-in, regardless
of number of copies.
William Dawson Group has formed a new
subsidiary company, Serials Management
Services Ltd., to operate the service. The
Executive Director of the new company is to
be Mr. Brian Ingleby, formerly Dawson's
computer services director. William Dawson
claims that the company will market a range
of computer services for serials librarians
after market research into their needs.
Further information is available from
William Dawson and Sons Ltd, Cannon
House, Folkestone, Kent, England.
OCLC improves cataloguing
and ILL services
The Ohio-based Online Computer Library
Center (OCLC) has enhanced the software
used in its Interlibrary Loan and Cataloguing
subsystems. This is the second set of en-
hancements to be installed in four months and
is the Center's response to requests and
suggestions from its users.
The improvements to the ILL subsystem
include:
ILL Constant Data. This enables users to
avoid rekeying repetitive information, such
as address in ILL forms.
Monthly Activity Report: a report which pro-
vides users with detailed statistical infor-
mation on their OCLC usage. It can be
ordered online.
Link to Name-Address Directory: users can
now search the OCLC Name-Address
Directory while logged in to the ILL subsys-
tem, providing access to library address and
ILL policy information.
Enhancements to the Cataloguing Sub-
system include:
Enhance Capability: this will allow selected
OCLC users to add data and correct data in
bibliographic records, and to replace those
records in the online Union Catalogue..
Twenty libraries will be able to use this
facility.
Changes in bibliographic forms: these will
reflect both updates from the Library of
Congress and requests from OCLC users
and
staff.
Reinstatement of corporate author searching
during prime time: on a trial basis, users
may now carry out author searches during
prime access time. Users were previously
limited to offpeak hours for such searches.
Searching uniform titles in the Name Auth-
ority File: OCLC users are now able to
access uniform title fields in the Name
Authority File.
Other enhancements have been made to the
label display, mutual exclusivity of biblio-
graphic fields and catalogue workform and
messages.
