Law reform
Legal advice for detained suspects: United Kingdom
According to a report written by Lee Bridges and Ed Cape for the Centre for Crime
and Justice Studies at King’s College London, the universal right of suspects to
consult with a solicitor of their choice has been undermined by the introduction
in 2008 of two related schemes for the delivery of legal advice to those in police
custody, Criminal Defence Service Direct and the Defence Solicitor Call Centre.
The authors suggest that the schemes are of questionable legality and may
contravene the European Convention on Human Rights.
