Abstract
Chris Harding, as he called himself, was a researcher, writer, teacher, reviewer, and academic
strategist, long-affiliated with Aberystwyth University, and most recently Emeritus Professor of Law
there. He was a teacher and researcher at Aberystwyth since the 1970s, and a Professor of Law
since 1995. He was the author of several books, academic papers, reviews, reports, and other
pieces on legal, criminological, and historical subjects.

I met Chris in 2007 at the Hague, and from the very beginning we enjoyed a friendly academic
relationship. We used to chat about many topics, sharing our common research interests in the field
of European studies. Chris combined his extraordinary teaching talent with scientific research and
passions such as traveling, cycling, literature, listening to music, and painting watercolors.
I got to know Chris better while working on joint projects, the effects of which are several of our
publications. He was an excellent teacher who was able to instill creative thinking in his students
like me, developing their own ideas and reflections. His approach to younger academics was always
cordial, fostering self-development. Chris was a modest, very kind, and helpful teacher, friend, and
colleague. On the other hand, he was distinguished by enormous energy and a smile for everyone.
His premature death is a huge blow to everyone who was close to him.
A teacher, researcher, writer, friend and colleague, who marked his presence in academic life
through his cooperation on many joint projects, books, and articles, has passed away from us. He has
left a great void that will be difficult to fill. But, everything he has done for our academic community
is and will remain alive among us. His attitude, work, and achievements can be an example to
follow.
Chris will remain in the memory of his friends, colleagues, students, and our entire academic
community. Since Chris used to write poems, so instead of using the words: he passed away, it is
better to say that “he went on his journey to the other end of the river’s life.”
