The Office of Fair Trading's proposal to extend legal professional privilege to accountants would thwart attempts to prevent corporate scandals, according to Public Concern at Work. The whistle-blowing charity is concerned that the extension of privilege, a super-confidentiality clause, will deter accountants from exposing business malpractice.

More, not less, whistle-blowing is needed if public confidence in the professions is to recover, according to Guy Dehn, the charity's director. "The public expects professional advisers to use their influence to encourage clients to act lawfully and deal properly with any wrongdoing," he said.

Whistle-blowers have been protected by the Public Interest Disclosure Act since July 1999, but many still find that going public with their allegations proves detrimental to their careers. The media spotlight returned to whistle-blowing in December...
