Parental control application on Android platform

1. Introduction
Because of technology development, a
wide range of people can easily access the
internet to get information. Putra and
Manggala (2012) stated that, “Internet
Penetration reach 30 per cent, the rate
increased by 4 points from that of
previous year.” The rise in internet’s
penetration indicates that users
continuously increase every year.
Supported by the statement Asosiasi
Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia
(APJII), Wahyudi (2013) said, “In 2012
Internet users in Indonesia reached
63 million that is equivalent to
approximately 24 per cent of the
country’s total population. We predict
that amount will increase by 30 per cent
to 82 million and in 2014 Internet user
will rise to 107 million then in 2015 the
users will be 139 million or half of the
country total population.”
People can use smartphones and
tablets as devices for accessing the
internet. Wahyudi (2013) quoted John
Fong’s statement that the majority of
tablet users prefer apps, particularly
those that access digital media such as
newspaper, tabloid, magazine or other
electronic media. In addition to this
statement, the same article contained the
business insider Intelligence remark that
Indonesa is the fourth-largest tablet user
in Asia, afterChina, India and Japan.
The development of internet
technology also has a negative impact such
as pornography. This is supported by
Ningrum’s (2013) statement quoted from
the Liputan 6 website, “There are 200
pornography scam applications issued by
more than 50 developers.” This implies
that users can easily gain the negative
content through the Google Play Store. In
this condition, the young generation can
easily access this content through their
mobile devices in the absence of their
parents; certainly, this will have a negative
impact on the morals of our youth.
The recent advances in internet
technology have the greatest negative
impact on teenagers aged 13-17 years. In
accordance with an FBI investigation
on child prostitution, Ningrum’s (2013)
described that the dark side of society is
growing along with internet sites that
provide easy access to people who pursue
girls as potential prostitutes. The parental
control application is postulated to be
one of the solutions to minimize
the abovementioned problems. This
application enables parents to supervise
and restrict children’s usage of their
mobile devices.
One reason for the increase in young
people’s access to the negative content
and effect on their moral behavior is
game addiction. Candra (2012) said that
game addiction is not the only thing that
damages young people’s morals. With
home computers, parents are able to
supervise all internet activities carried
out by their child. GAN (2013)
performed a survey of 236 university
and other students in the USA with
regards to the pornography content
access through SMS. The students aged
