THE
preparation of periodicals for binding, and the making of the necessary
records, takes a great deal of time. The Periodicals Department of the
University of London Library (which sends more than 2,000 volumes of
periodicals to be bound every year) felt that this time could be greatly
reduced if a permanent binding record were made for each periodical which
was regularly bound.
The system devised, which has now been in use for three years, consists
of the provision of two identical cards (see diagram) for each title. One of
these is kept in a file in the Periodicals Department while the volume is
away being bound, and the other (on thicker card and in a different colour)
is sent to the binders with the volume.
The three firms of binders used by the library approved of this method,
as the record could remain with the volume it referred to through all the
