Police Permits

6.01 Visitors’ permits are covered in Chapter 7.

6.02 A police permit allows the holder to have in his possession1firearms and ammunition without holding a firearm certificate or a shotgun certificate.2

Another form of police permit allows an auctioneer to sell by auction, expose for sale by auction and have in his possession for sale by auction firearms and ammunition without holding a certificate of either kind.3

Forms for each kind of permit are prescribed by the Firearms Rules 1998, r 9 and Sch 4.

4FA 1968, ss 7(1), 9(2). An applicant cannot be said to reside at a property which he has let (Burditt v Joslin [1981] 3 All ER 203, The Times, 13 February 1981).
