Preface

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.

Arriving there is what you’re destined for. But don’t hurry the journey at all.

Better if it lasts for years,

The production of the seventh edition of a travel law textbook may seem an eccentric undertaking at a time when the ebb tide of Covid-19 and, now, the fresh horror of war in Ukraine are driving down the demand for foreign work/fun/adventure. But, like Cavafy’s Ionian travellers, the co-authors of this textbook continue to travel in hope. The more senior among us know that the journey to this seventh edition has lasted ‘years’ and the more junior will swiftly discover – if they do not know already – that writing legal textbooks does not make you ‘rich’.

We embarked upon the journey of this new edition with an unusual amount of foreboding and hesitation: Brexit, a new Package Travel Directive and the anticipated domestic Regulations, together with the usual glut of new case law, meant that the task of producing the next edition (what Alan Saggerson, with his usual prescience, termed the ‘Brexit’ edition) was always going to be a daunting one. However, the more, ahem, senior authors have been fortunate indeed in being able to welcome new co-authors to the Saggerson on Travel Law and Litigation family. We are thrilled that Dominique Smith, Henk Soede and Thomas Yarrow – all dedicated members of the 1 Chancery Lane travel team – have been prepared to sacrifice many of their evenings and weekends to this edition. I already feel that I have learnt a great deal from their contributions to the ongoing and regular scholarly output of 1 Chancery Lane’s travel team, and I am delighted that they have...
