NATIONAL
EXECUTIVE
COMMITTEE
A
meeting
of
the
National
Executive
Committee
was
held
in
London
on
March
lst
when
reports
were
received
from
the
Edridge
Benevolent
Fund
Committee,
and
the
Journal,
Handbook,
Conference
and
General
Purposes
Sub-Committees.
The
Committee
also
heard
reports
from
a
delegation
which
had
given
evidence
before
the
Care
of
Children
Committee,
and
a
deputation
which
had
paid
two
visits
to
the
Home
Office
on
points
referred
from
previous
meetings.
These
points
included
superannuation;
reporting
on
nfficers;
short-term
hostels
for
school
children;
exten-
sion
of
probation
officers’
work;
enquiry
into
recidivism;
superannuation
and
probation
orders;
uniform
scale
of
motor
car
allowances;
assisted
motor
car
purchase;
the
future
Criminal
Justice
Bill;
allowance
for
time
spent
in
attending
N.A.P.O.
Committee
meetings.;
and
salaries.
Among
matters
dealt
with
in
the
General
Purposes
Sub-Committee
Report
were
&dquo; Consent
to
Marry &dquo;
cases,
Revocation
of
&dquo; Fit
Person&dquo;
&dquo;
Orders,
and
Section
40,
Education
Act,
1944.
In
all
these
types
of
case
it
was
felt
that
social
enquiries
should
be
made
by
the
Proba-
tion
Service.
It
was
also
thought
that
the
duty
of
guardian
ad
litem
under
the
Adoption
Act
was
a
proper
duty
for
probation
officer,
the
social
advisers
of
the
Courts.
Consideration
was
given
to
questions
relating
to
the
appointment
of
men
and
women
senior
cfficers
in
areas
where
there
is
a
principal
probation
officer
and
to
the
appointment
of
senior
probation
officers
in
areas
where
there
is
no
principal
probation
officer.
Other
subjects
considered
by
the
National
Executive
include
office
accommodation
for
N.A.P.O.,
hostel
accom-
modation
for
probation
officers;
the
secretaryship
of
the
Association;
a
probation
officers’
charter;
guardian-
ship
of
children;
and
the
treatment
of
parents
charged
and
sentenced
for
neglect
of
children.

BRANCH
The
Berks.,
Bucks.
and
Oxon.
Branch
held
its
first
annual
meeting
in
January
and
reviewed
an
active
year
in
which
six
branch
meetings
and
a
day
conference,
concerned
with
post-war
matrimonial
work,
were
held
and
two
branch
committees
prepared
reports.
During
the
past
year
the
National
Executive
has
supplied
branches
with
a
good
deal
of
material
for
con-
sideration
and
requests
for
opinions.
In
addition,
this
branch
has,
since
October,
held
meetings
covering
a
morning
branch
business
session
and
an
afternoon
which
is
devoted
to
a
visiting
speaker
or
special
discus-
sion.
Our
future
plans
will
be
based
in
such
full
day
meetings.
