R.
S.
HUTTON
Goldsmiths' Emeritus-Professor
of
Metallurgy
at
the
University of Cambridge and founder member of Aslib
on
the
occasion of his ninetieth birthday
28 November 1966*
PROFESSOR
R.
S.
HUTTON,
D.SC. (MANC.), M.A. (CANTAB.)
is
honoured
by Aslib
as one
of its founders
and for
outstanding service
to it
over more
than four decades. Aslib pays tribute
to one who has
served
it
more than
well
in
countless ways
and,
with foresight
and
wisdom, provided that
quality
of
leadership which
has
done
so
much
to
ensure
its
development
along sound lines.
Brief career details are given below to show this remarkable contribution
to Aslib's interests within
its
personal context. They
are
taken from
his
autobiography, which makes truly fascinating reading
in
its account of an
unusually varied
and
distinguished career comprising
a
number of highly
responsible positions
and a
phenomenal range
of
interests
and
commit-
ments. There
is,
throughout,
a
distinct
and
continuous thread
to be
seen
clearly; that
is
an understanding of the importance of libraries, giving rise
to
continual efforts
for the
wider establishment
and
fuller development
of
effective information services.
Aslib for long
has
acknowledged this deep concern and vigorous activity
as belonging
to a
pioneer of the highest order.
