Designed to be a support tool for the busy scientist or re-
searcher, Reference Manager allows for quick and easy access
to data references. The package provides the ability to gener-
ate bibliographies, cut and paste references into wordproces-
sor documents, and import references from selected online
and CDROM services.
The Windows version of Reference Manager takes full ad-
vantage of the Windows user interface, with pull-down
menus, dialog boxes and online help, all available with the
click of a mouse.
Imports from CDROM and online services
Databases of journal citations can be created through Refer-
ence Manager by entering the references by hand. Alterna-
tively a Reference Manager capture module allows data to be
imported from many selected online and CDROM services,
such as Dialog, BRS Afterdark, NLM, SilverPlatter, Medline
and many others. Retrieval criteria for capturing references
from these services may be chosen by the user to include any
or all of the following: author name, editor name, keyword,
journal name, publication year and reference ID.
Built-in bibliographic formats
References in Reference Manager can be formatted in many
ways.
Reference Manager comes with many widely-used bib-
liographic formats for displaying and printing references. In
addition, users can design and create new formats as needed,
including text formatting such as italics.
Up to 65 000 references can be stored under Reference
Manager. The stored references can then be sorted in
a
variety
of
ways
for display and printing. In this way, bibliographies
can be created and printed or displayed using Reference Man-
ager
itself.
Output to wordprocessors
Users who want to copy stored references into wordprocess-
ing documents, such as papers, reports and correspondence,
can make use of Reference Manager's splicer module. This
module allows formatted references to be copied into docu-
ments created by the following wordprocessing packages:
Ami Pro, Word for DOS, Word for Windows, WordPerfect,
WordPerfect for Windows, Wordstar, and XyWrite. Using
the Windows clipboard, references displayed
as
plain text can
be cut from Reference Manager and pasted into any other
Windows application.
This reviewer found installation of Reference Manager to
be simple and well documented.
