RESEARCH AND RESULTS

A look at current trends and data
inefficiency more than any other
national group.
How different industries fared
All executives in all industries ranked
internal communication at the top, but
it’s much less of an issue for executives in
the manufacturing and oil, gas and
chemicals sectors. Telecommunications,
technology, transport and service sectors
rank poor employee motivation or
morale highly as a contributing factor to
inefficiency.
But data taken from the business
reviews doesn’t always bear out the
views of the survey respondents.
Inadequate supervision of work was seen
to have a high impact on time wasted,
scoring 38 percent, although the report
stated “it should be acknowledged that
there is a correlation between this and
poor communication.”
The most notable variant is the
problem of poor communication, which
the data shows is less of a commonplace
cause of wasted working time at just six
percent in 2005.

enior industry executives cited poor
management, poor employee
motivation or morale and internal
communication problems as the primary
causes of inefficiency in a recent survey
by Proudfoot Consulting.
The 2006 Proudfoot Productivity
Report is based on two halves of
research: a survey of 800 company
bosses across 19 countries, and a
compilation of 1,900 business reviews
conducted in 30 countries from 2002 to
2005.
Major causes of poor performance
When asked to rank 10 reasons why
companies performed poorly, 44
percent cited poor management, 33
percent said it was down to poor
employee motivation or morale and just
under 50 percent of the total number
of survey respondents put the blame on
internal communication problems
between departments. Transport
infrastructure and outdated plant,
machinery and technology were ranked
least important of the 10 factors at 10
percent and 16 percent respectively.
There were splits between various
nations. US and UK executives placed
the most importance on internal
communication and the former also
ranked poor management above
average as a cause of inefficiency. In
France and Australia, employee
motivation is seen as a strong
determinant, while the French blame

employees. A survey from StepStone, a
European provider of online recruitment
services and solutions, has revealed that
more than two-thirds of respondents (68
percent) believe that they couldn’t do
their jobs properly if they didn’t know
the strategic direction of their employer.
The research found that only a small
minority of respondents (10 percent)
believe that they don’t need to know
their company’s corporate strategy for
their role. However, more than a fifth of
respondents (22 percent) commented
that they didn’t think that their company
has a corporate strategy.
The results highlight the importance
of clearly communicating company
strategy to staff. Commenting on the
findings, Colin Tenwick, CEO of
StepStone said: “Companies should
communicate their business objectives
through the most appropriate channels.
Corporate strategy information is
important for ensuring that the company
is properly represented externally and
for fostering a sense of community and
teamwork among employees.”
