Abstract
The role of silence has received increasing attention in International Relations, ranging from
silence as exclusion to secrecy and performance. Yet, there has been little effort to draw
together a more practical, methodological inquiry into silence and how to engage with it in
the research processes. This article builds on existing studies on silence and our own research
experiences in conducting interviews and text analysis to interrogate the role silence plays in
the research process. It aims to develop methodological tools for engaging with silence and
offers a practical guide to analysing it from the data generation stage to the interpretation
of silence. In doing so, it also contributes to attempts to redefine the meaning of silence in
International Relations by including silence as more than an absence.

Une enquête méthodologique sur le silence
Résumé
Le rôle du silence a fait l’objet d’un intérêt croissant dans les relations internationales,
allant du silence comme forme d’exclusion, au secret et à la performance. Peu d’efforts
ont pourtant été faits pour enquêter de manière plus pratique et méthodologique
sur le silence et sur les façons de l’aborder dans les processus de recherche. Cet
article s’appuie sur des études existantes sur le silence et sur nos propres expériences

méthodologiques pour s’intéresser au silence et offre un guide pratique pour

faisant, il contribue également aux tentatives visant à redéfinir le sens du silence dans
les relations internationales, en percevant le silence non plus seulement comme une
absence.

Investigar el silencio: Un estudio metodológico
Resumen
El papel del silencio ha recibido una atención creciente en las relaciones internacionales, que ha
oscilado desde el silencio entendido como exclusión al silencio como secreto y actuación. Poco
esfuerzo se ha hecho, sin embargo, por realizar una investigación más práctica y metodológica
sobre el silencio y la forma de abordarlo en los procesos de investigación. Para analizar el papel
que el silencio juega en el proceso de investigación, este artículo se basa en estudios ya existentes
sobre el silencio y en nuestras propias experiencias de investigación durante la realización de
entrevistas y análisis de textos. Pretende desarrollar herramientas metodológicas para abordar
el silencio y ofrece una guía práctica para analizarlo que va desde la fase de generación de datos
hasta la interpretación del silencio. De este modo contribuye también a los intentos de redefinir
el significado del silencio en las relaciones internacionales, al incluir el silencio como algo más que
una ausencia.

Introduction
The social and political function of silence has received increasing attention in
International Relations and adjacent disciplines. Silence has been investigated in its
theatrical power, for example, in silent vigils or minutes1 and as resistance to domi-
nant discourses.2 Silence by elites has been studied as a strategy of concealment and
