overview rather than exhaustive detail and
includes chapters on Youth Justice and

of staff than has previously been the case.

practice guide to help professionals
produce high quality reports. It covers the
sentencing framework, the law, procedural
issues such as quality assurance and
missed appointments, preparation and

In Good Faith: A reSource (sic) guide for
mental and spiritual wellbeing was
compiled following research by the Mental
Health Foundation which found that
spiritual wellbeing is a major factor in
good mental health. The Guide lists and
explains ‘emotional resources’such as
psychotherapy practices, cultural and
religious support services; ‘physical
resources’which offer healing support
such as reflexology and massage; and
‘information and education resources’
about alternatives to traditional medicine.

Aimed at a wide professional and non-
professional audience, Suicide and
Self-Harm (2000) by Lisa Bird and Alison
Faulkner, briefly outlines the prevalence of
and trends in relation to suicide and self
harm, and discusses preventive measures.
It helpfully differentiates between
motivations for and objectives of self-
injuring behaviour, and lists other useful

An estimated 50,000 children and young
people in Britain today regularly take on
the responsibility of caring for ill or
disabled parents or relatives. Young Carers
in Their Own Words (2000) by Andrew
Bibby and Saul Becker, provides a review
of the main issues and problems faced by
young carers. It outlines and assesses
recent policy developments and makes
recommendations for future practice,
including a series of good practice
checklists for use by professionals and
others in contact with young carers.
