Legal advice for employment and housing problems
Community Legal Service Direct, the telephone and online legal aid service, have
launched two new telephone advice lines for people with employment or housing
problems. The Community Legal Service Direct helplines are available by calling
0845 345 4345. Anyone that calls the Community Legal Service Direct helpline
can get free initial advice from a qualified legal adviser about benefits and tax
credits, debt, education, housing or employment. People eligible for legal aid can
get further help by telephone and post, or be referred for face-to-face advice for
problems that cannot be solved over the phone. Callers can also order free legal
information leaflets on a variety of topics, find a quality local legal adviser or
solicitor, and listen to frequently asked question on common problems. Further
information can be obtained from Community Legal Service Direct’s website
www.clsdirect.org.uk. Information is available in other languages including
Arabic, Hindi and Turkish.
CD Rom guidance for good race relations
The Commission for Race Equality has launched ‘Promoting good race relations:
a guide for public authorities’ with guidance also relevant to those in the private
and voluntary sectors. The guide – in CD-Rom format – explains what good race
relations are and gives examples of the types of activities that are likely to promote
good race relations and help authorities to meet this part of their duty. It includes
information on roles and responsibilities for criminal justice and provides case
studies. The guide can be obtained free from the web link http://www.cre.gov.uk/
duty/grr/index.html or downloaded in PDF format.
Quick access to prison law information
The publishers of The Prisons Handbook, MLA Press, have produced ‘Fast Facts’
about Prison Law. The subjects cover different stages of prison from reception to
release. Topics include Reception and Induction; Requests and Complaints; Letters,
Visits & Telephone Calls, The Prison Disciplinary System; Healthcare; Disability in
