Foreign

not
a
central

cern
of
these

Nevertheless,
much
of
the
economic

anyone

as
the

PEACEKEEPING
IN
AFRICA
ECOMOG
in Liberia

As
the
title
implies, this
collection
of
ten
essays
deals
with
various
aspects
of
the
intervention
of
ECOMOG
(the
ceasefire
monitoring
group
of
the
Economic
Community
of
West African
States)
in
the
Liberian
civil
war.
The
focus
of
the
book
is
on
the
problems
raised
by
peace-
keeping
efforts
in
Third
World
countries,
the
diplomatic
rivalries
at
play,
and
the
question
of
whether
this
intervention
worsened
the
situ-
ation
and
lengthened
the
period
of
fighting.
A
limitation
of
the
work
is
that
the
essays
examine
only the
early
stages
of
the
intervention,
but
such
judgments
look
a
bit
thin
in
the
absence
of
a
finale.
Nevertheless,
this
is a
very
interesting study
of
an
important
topic
with
ramifications
wider
than
the
African
context.
AFRICAN

Another
collection
of
essays,
by
authors
who
are
for
the
most part
well
known
in
the
field,
takes
a
pan-African
look
at
the foreign
policies
and
international
relations
of
states
south
of
the
Sahara.
Most
of
the
stud-
ies
deal
with
the
foreign
policies
of
a
single
state,
so
that
the
book
forms
a
useful
reference
tool
to
look at
particular
countries.
Two
themes
clearly
stand
out:
the
effects
of
economic
collapse
and debt,
and
the
problems
of
peacemaking
in
conditions
of
internal
violence.
