crisis
of
1970-
1.
Both
essays
point
out
that
Canada
enjoys
a
good
reputation
in
the
Com-
monwealth, the
result
of
hard
work,
genuine
concern,
and
massive
investment
in
both
personnel
and
financial
resources.
The
Common-
wealth
has
been
a
constant
theme,
albeit
muted
at
times,
in
Holmes'
interests.
The
contributions
in
this
tribute
to
John
Holmes
attempt
to
repre-
sent
the
vast
expanse
of
his
interests,
experience,
and
knowledge.
Chronologically
they
span
his active
years
from
the
1930S
to
the
pres-
ent.
They
span
his
talks
and
witness
to
the
staying
power
in
his
inter-
pretation
of
the
world
and
of
Canada's role
in
that
world.
The
intro-
ductory
essay
mentioned
above
on the pedagogy
of
Holmes
also
serves
well
as
an
epilogue. For,
as
the
author
argues,
the
centrality
of
conflict
in
life
and
in
John
Holmes'
interpretation
of
international
politics
and
the
dedication
needed
on the
part
of
nations
seeking
ways
to
accommodate
that
conflict
is
a
theme
that runs throughout
Holmes'
own
lectures,
observations,
and publications.
It
is
a
theme
not
absent from
this
collection
of
essays.
