This
is
a
textbook on
the
history
and
politics
of
American
trade
policy.
There
are
four
major
sections:
a
history
of
United
States
trade
policy;
a
textbook rehearsal
of
theories
of international
trade
for those
who
missed
Economics
I
oo;
a very
useful
primer
on
the
politics
and
adminis-
tration
of
contemporary
American
trade
policy;
and
a
concluding
sec-
tion
that
covers
American
trade
withJapan,
Europe,
the
'nonindustrial-
ized
countries,'
and
liberalization in the
context
of
the
North
American
Free
Trade
Agreement
and
the
Uruguay
Round. Included
in
this
final
section
are
two
short
(and
unsatisfying)
chapters
on
the
future
of
American
trade
policy
that
will
quickly
become
dated.
Each
chapter
fea-
tures
a
bibliography and
useful
illustrations.

One
of
the
by-products
of
Australia's
'push' into
Asia
over
the
last
two
decades
is
that there
has
developed
in
the
Australian
academy
a
strong
community
of
Sinologists.
This volume
brings
many
of
them
together
in
an
edited
collection
that
surveys
Chinese
foreign
policy
in
the
Asia-
Pacific.
In
addition,
the
editors
invited
two
scholars from
the
People's
Republic
of
China,
and
Samuel
Kim
of
Princeton
to
add
their
perspec-
tives.
Chapters
focus
on
China's
relations
with
its
neighbours
in
the
region
-
and
beyond:
the
United
States,
Japan,
Russia,
India,
Southeast
Asia,
Korea,
Vietnam,
and
Taiwan
(though,
oddly
enough, none
on
Sino-Australian
relations).
There
are
also
thematic
chapters
on
military,
economic,
and
environmental
affairs.
The
volume
provides
a
rich
tour
d'horizon
and
a
welcome
alternative
to
Americo-centred scholarship
on
Chinese
foreign
policy.
