Rosalind Hurworth:
The name behind the
Ros Hurworth prize
This December issue includes the first of many Evaluation Perspectives that we are
planning to share with our readers. We have selected an esteemed evaluator for this
inaugural feature. Ros Hurworth sadly passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy
of comprehensive contributions in the areas of qualitative methods and evaluation. We
would like to thank Anthea Rutter for providing the Evaluation Journal of Australasia
(EJA) with this interesting and valuable interview conducted many years ago.
It would be very understandable to those who knew Ros Hurworth that there is a
prize in her name. For those who did not know Ros, and here I am thinking about new
evaluators, or new members of the Australasian Evaluation Society (AES), they will
wonder what the ‘Ros Hurworth Prize’ is all about.
Colleagues and students acquainted with Ros knew all about ‘the red pen’. It was
well known in the Centre for Program Evaluation (CPE) at The University of
Melbourne. For students and colleagues alike, work was returned with those infamous
red markings. She was a stickler for the English language and woe betide anyone who
felt they could get away with less than brilliant prose. Indeed, I feel those eyes on my
writing now, and it would be no defence to say that I have ‘my own’ writing style!
