The Royal Navy Terms of Service (Ratings) (Amendment) Regulations 198323rdJune 1983

The Defence Council, in exercise of the powers conferred upon them by Section 2 of the Armed Forces Act 1966(a), and all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following regulations:
Citation, Commencement and Interpretation
1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Royal Navy Terms of Service (Ratings) (Amendment) Regulations 1983 and shall come into operation on 4 August 1983.
(2) In these Regulations "the Principal Regulations" means the Royal Navy Terms of Service (Ratings) Regulations 1982(b).
Amendments to the Principal Regulations
2.—Regulation 3 of the Principal Regulations shall be amended as follows:
(1) in paragraph (1) there are added at the end the words "or for a term as provided for in paragraph (3) of this Regulation";
(2) in paragraph (2) for the words "The term for which" there are substituted the words "Subject to paragraph (3) of this Regulation, the term for which";
(3) after paragraph (2) there is added the following paragraph:
"(3) In the case of a person who has attained the age of 16 years but has not attained the age of 18 years he may be entered under this paragraph for a special term of service in the Royal Navy which shall be a term—
(a) wholly of naval service;
(b) expiring 12 months from the date he first reports for duty following his entry into naval service, subject to a right of the person in question to determine his service at any time by 14 days notice in writing given by him to his Commanding Officer immediately before the date upon which it is to take effect;

(c) to which Regulations 4, 5, 7 and 8 shall not apply, but without prejudice to the application of those paragraphs to any conversion of terms of service made under sub-paragraph (d) of this paragraph;
(d) in respect of which the person in question may give notice to his Commanding Officer of his desire to be treated as if he had entered naval service under a different term provided for by this Regulation, as may be specified in the notice; and if the authority specified in Schedule 1 of these Regulations as being the competent naval authority for the purpose of Regulation 8 approve, he shall be treated as if he had entered for such a term".
