From a distance, the 2017 election
in Scotland may look like a good
win for the Scottish National Party.
The party won an overall majority
of the 59 seats in Scotland – 11 more than all
of the other parties put together. Its 37 per
cent share of the vote put it eight percentage
points ahead of its nearest rivals and by
some distance, gave the SNP its second best
Westminster election performance in its
history. It’s a pity that its best performance
came just two years earlier.
It was always going to be dicult for the
SNP to come close to the spectacular success
of the 2015 election, when it secured half of
the votes cast and all but three of the 59 seats,
transforming the UK’s electoral map. But the
losses suered in 2017 – 21 seats and a 13
