Omcers who have not yet paid their subscriptions
will

this
omce or from the local branch treasurer. Will those
who have not yet responded to the reminder please do
so?
It
ls
a
waste of our members’ own money
if
extra
correspondence has
to
be involved in getting in sub-
scriptions whlch are overdue.
GERMAN
WELFARE
COUNCIL
I
am taking the opportunity again
to
remind members
that there
is
now in existence, in London. a German
Welfare Council. Thie Council
has
been extremely
helpful
to
probation officers who have had any difRculty
with German subjects or German refugees coming into
their omce or coming to them for advice. The Welfare
Council hopes in due course to open a German club in
London.
Its
work, however,
is
not conflned to London.
It
gives advice about employment possibilities for
Germans, about organisations which might be helpful
to
them, about hostels and spare-time activities. The
organising secretary, Miss Morna Smith. will always be
glad to answer enquiries. She
also
expresses her appre-
ciation of the help she has received from probation
odticers in various parts of the country. Her address
is
25,
Villiers Street, Strand, London,
W.C.2.

IN
SOCIOLOGY

1955/56,

don courses for the Dlploma in 8ociology will be held
weekly

of a lecture lasting about one hour, followed

together with
the

ADVANCED
COURSE
OF TkAINING FOR
EXPERIENCm
CASE-WWKERS
The
Tavlstock CUnlc offers
six
vaeanciee
for
qualiied,
experlenced case-workers to take thla full-time course,
extending from mid-September. 1956, to the
end
of July,
1957,
with
usual holidays. Candidates should preferably
be aged
28
to 45.
The training, given in the Department for Children
and Parents, affords students an opportunity to improve
case-work skills and develop capacity for teaching and
supervision in their own professional flelds. Through
the generosity
of
the Field Foundation, a fund
is
avail-
able which provides annually
a
small number
of
sub-
stantial fellowships, but cannot thus provide for all six
students; candidates should therefore,
if
possible, obtain
secondment
by
their employers or seek help from other
sources.
Students will learn about the normal development
of
personality from infancy onwards, the family
as
training-ground for personal relationships, and common
obstacles to emotional and social development, in the
light
of psycho-analytic theory. The roots
of
social
and emotional relationships are studied through regular
observation of normal infants with their mothers, and
supervised case-work
with
patients’ parents Mords
opportunities for students to gain deeper understanding
of the use
of
the interview and of a professional relatlon-
ship
in work with adult clients.
The
Awards
Committee, which makes the flnal selec-
tion of candidates, has been established
by
the Council
of
the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, and
Is
composed of prominent teachers
of
social work and
others concerned with professional devment.
Further informatlon and applicatioe forms may be
obtained from the Senior Tutor, The Advanced Case-
Work Course, The Tavlstock Clink.
