Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paperis to help CEOs understand the capabilities and mechanismsthat
they needto adopt today to build successful organizationsin the future.
Design/methodology/approach It illustrates with examples of global companies including
Blockbuster, Nokia,Kodak and Sears that failed to embrace change while Google,Amazon, Apple and
Facebooksucceeded in reinventing. It draws a blueprintfor CEOs to build organizations in the future.
Findings It implores to planfor multiple and emerging visions of the future usinga scenario approach.
It concludes that CEOs must predict the future, embrace change and adopt innovative tools and
techniquesto lead the organizations in the future.
Practical implications These tools and techniquescan be applied by chief executives in any industry
and any sizeof the organization.
Social implications The social implications of this research suggest that the chief executives must
adopt thesetools and techniques to build the organizationsof the future.
Originality/value It explores organizational network analysis, encourages a focused differentiation
strategy and emphasizes differentiated skill-focused structures. It advises integrated efforts from all
stakeholders including the organization, employees, human resourcesand chief executives to reinvent
and buildorganizations of the future.

We live in an interconnected world where changes occur in an unprecedented manner. It
has become an enormous challenge to adapt to thebusiness environment and a Herculean
challenge to predict the aspirations and expectations of the clients and customers. Some
global companies including Blockbuster, Nokia, Kodak and Sears failed to embrace
change and ended up in a fiasco. In contrast, some global companies including Google,
Amazon, Apple and Facebook embraced change successfully and predicted the future. In
this regard, we will discuss the strategies for chief executives to reinvent and build
organizations of the future.
Strategies to build organizations of the future
Currently, organizations are more concerned about the challenges rather than thinking and
predicting the future. The CEOs are busy troubleshooting and improving the bottom lines
rather than preparing for the future. They think of crossing the bridges when they come.
They have short-term strategiesrather than long-term strategies. There must be a shiftin the
