Introduction
Due to trends and developments in information and communication technology (ICT),
modern society is being rapidly transformed by the application of knowledge in
multidimensional ways for the betterment of present day society. Similarly, the role of
ICT has changed the social environment, which has opened the path for people to
communicate with kindred groups using different means and modes of communication,
including social networking sites (SNSs). SNSs have quickly become one of the most
popular mediums of online communication. These sites, also referred to as SNSs, have
exploded over the past few years, resulting in increasing numbers of people using these
sites for personal, professional and academic purposes. This phenomenon has forced the
library and information professional to think about and explore the use of the SNSs,
especially for using these technologies within their libraries (Connell, 2009). Although
use of SNSs by Indian libraries is lagging behind compared to more developed countries,
The authors are thankful to Mr. Mahesh Chand, Assistant Librarian, Jawaharlal Nehru
University, New Delhi, for their kind cooperation and support during the study.
