The Politics Association
is
interested to hear from potential contributors to the Updating
articles
published in Teaching Politics. The articles
are
written with sixth form Politics
courses in mind, although they are also
used
on introductory undergraduate courses. From
time to time
articles
are also published
in
book form. There
are
many gaps
to
be
filled,
pa~~cularly in the
areas
of political concepts, pressure group politics and the
Civil
Service.
If your teaching or research interest lends
itself
to the production of an Updating piece,

TEACHING
ABOUT
WOMEN
AND
POLITICS
VICKY
RANDALL
Although political science was one of the last social science areas
to
respond
to the interest in women's roles triggered
by
'second-wave' feminism, there now
exists a considerable academic literature on women and politics. ~umerous studies
have appeared
during
the past few years which point out sexist bias
in
earlier treat-
ments
and
which
document
omen's
political behaviou~. Dema~d by students,
pressure
from feminist colleagues and a general increase of interest
in
the topic have helped
persuade political scientists that an analysis of women's political roles should not
only
occupy a key place on
the
syllabus
but
be
fully integrated into political studies.
Putting
this
recognition into practical effect naturally requires a working knowledge
of
the relevant academic literature and the intention of
this
article is
to
provide
a brief guide
to
those texts most profitably read and used as teaching aids1.
