THE IMPACT OF EU LAW ON
OCCUPATIONAL PENSIONS
CALL FOR PAPERS
e E xcellence Chai r on Pensions, which has recent ly been establis hed at UCLouvain
(Belgium) is launchi ng a research project on the normative impac t of EU intervention on
occupational (2nd pillar) pensions, de ned as private supplementar y schemes linked to an
employment relationship. In th is context, the directors of t he Chair wish to put together a
collection of impor tant contributions on thi s topic, and these will appe ar as a Special Issue
of EJSS which wil l be published in the summer of 2017.
e project aims to explore the relation ships between occ upational pension s systems
and the EU. It mainly envi sages a top-down approach that focu ses on normative impacts as
well as on the drivers of t hese impacts.  i s general perspective wil l be complemented by a
more bottom-up approach that foc uses on ‘veto points’ possibly act ivated by national actors
in the context of negotiations over legislative proposals at EU level, as well as on eventual
signs of ‘preference uploading’ by Member St ates.
e Speci al Issue wil l include contributions f rom social scient ists as well as f rom
lawyers and wi ll be edited by Prof. Dr. Alexia Autenne a nd Dr. Marco Rocca
e editors invite abstrac ts of 500 to 1000 words f rom scholars who are interested in
contributing to the Sp ecial Issue on ‘ e Impact of EU Law on Occupational Pensions.
Contributions shou ld focus on hard and/or so law aspects, analysing them f rom a legal,
and/or social sciences perspective.  e editors are particula rly interested in contributions
dealing w ith one or more of the following topics:
1. Historical over view of the in uence of the EU on occupationa l pensions.
2. Di erent ‘models’ of occupational pensions (in term s of solidarit y, redistribution of
income, sustain ability…) and their ‘ t’ wit h the EU policy in the  eld.
3. Occupationa l pensions and the EU ‘acquis’ on equal tre atment and non-discrim ination.
4. Free movement of workers and occupationa l pensions.
5. Actual or potential tensions b etween nationa l regulations or pr actices in t he  eld of
occupational pe nsions and EU law, with a special atte ntion to the case law of the Cour t
of Justice.
Abstracts shou ld be submitted by 31January 2016 at the latest . Decisions will be ta ken on an
ongoing basis and applic ants wil l be noti ed by 28Februar y 2016. For accepted abstrac ts,
