The
Kerrison
School.
The
Kerrison
School,
the
only
Reformatory
in
the
East
of
Eng-
land
lies
just
off
the
Ipswich-Nor-
wich
main
road,
some
18
miles
from
the
former
and
26
miles
from
the
latter
town.
It
owes
its
s
origin
to
Sir
Edward
Kerrison,
Bart.,
of
Brome
Hall,
Suffolk,
who
in
1856
bought
a
small
farm
in
Thorndon,
and
erected
suitable
buildings
on
it,
chiefly
at
his
own
expense,
for
the
purposes
s
of
f
a
Reformatory.
per
week,
when
in
addition
to
ordin-
ary
scholastic
work,
classes
are
held
in
physical
training,
drama-
tics,
wood
and
metal
work,
first
aid,
singing
and
instrumental
I
music.
One
of
f
the
most
valuable
.
features
of
the
school
is
the
Brass
and
Reed
Band
consisting
of
about
thirty
per-
formers.
Games
play
an
important
t
part
in
the
develop-
ment
of
character
and
there
are
ex-
cellent
t
football
and
cricket
pitches
The
premises
have
at
various
times
been
increased
and
improved,
and
two
years
ago
an
entire
re-organisa-
tion
and
enlargement
scheme
was
carried
through
at
considerable
cost,
making
the
school
one
of
the
best
equipped
of
its
kind.
The
school
is
classed
as
an
agricultural
school,
and
agriculture
has
always
been
the
chief
employment.
The
school
estate
runs
to
some
168
acres
and
there
is
a
herd
of
pedigree
Red
Poll
cattle
and
a
stud
of
pedigree
Suffolk
horses,
with
pigs,
poultry,
etc.,
and
a
really
good
training
in
all
branches
of
farm
work
is
given,
advantage
being
taken
of
special
classes
run
from
time
to
time
by
the
local
Education
Authority.
The
school
belongs
to
the
Suffolk
Milk
Recording
Society
and
has
enjoyed
regular
successes
in
the
County
Clean
Milk
competition.
Although
farming
is
the
principal
training
it
is
by
no
means
the
only
one.
There
is
a
garden
of
4t
acres
where
boys
receive
training
and
a
large
carpenters
shop
where
estate
carpentry
is
taught.
The
care
and
management
of
the
electric
light
plant
can
be
learnt
and
certain
boys
are
responsible
for
the
driving
and
care
of
a
motor
lorry
which
is
owned
by
the
school
and
used
for
delivering
produce
to
market
and
for
taking
out
football
and
cricket
teams,
etc.
Baking,
cooking
and
office
routine
are
other
branches
of
instruction
in
which
tuition
is
given.
Boys
with
any
special
aptitude
are
given
every
facility
to
pursue
a
course
of
study
likely
to
further
their
interests.
All
boys
take
a
course
of
instruction
in
the
school-
room
following
admission,
after
which
they
undertake
some
form
of
vocational
training
according
to
their
inclination
and
ability.
During
the
winter
months
all
boys
attend
continuation
classes
for
three
evenings
in
the
school
grounds
and
matches
are
regularly
played
with
teams
from
the
surrounding
district.
A
river
. runs
through
the
estate
and
there
are
facilities
for
swimming
and
fishing
in
the
stream.
An
annual
camp
of
fourteen
days
under
canvas
is
held
at
the
sea-side,
annual
home
leave
of
from
five
to
ten
days
is
granted
to
all
boys
of
good
conduct
if
suitable
home
accommodation
can
be
provided.
On
leaving
the
school
boys
are
kept
in
touch
with
for
at
least
three
years,
and
over
go%
of
them
do
really
well.
Old
boys
are
always
welcome
to
visit
the
school
and
many
of
them
do
so
whenever
an
oppor-
tunity
occurs.
Anyone
interested
in
reformative
work
is
welcome
to
visit
the
school
at
any
time.

The

passed
the
second
reading
in
the
House
of
Commons
at
the
beginning
of
March
and
has
been
referred
to
Committee.
The
Secretary
of
State
for
Scotland
has
invited
N.A.P.O.
to
submit
suggestions
on
the
Bill
and
Mr.
Lovat
Fraser,
M.P.
has
agreed
to
introduce
into
Com-
mittee
any
amendments
which
we
may
recommend.
Copies
of
the
Bill
have
been
circulated
to
Branch
Secretaries
of
N.A.P.O.
and
further
copies
may
be
obtained
from
the
Government
Stationery
Office.
Comments
or
suggestions
from
members
upon
the
Clauses
of
the
Bill
will
be
welcomed
and
submitted
for
consideration.
