ABSTRACT
e principl e of gender equality is arguably one of the most successf ul stories of EU law. In
recent years, it has evolved in order to ad apt to the needs of a fast changing society. Such
evolution is mirrored in the legisl ative instruments recently adopted.  is article focuses
on one of the most recent Directives, na mely the 2004 Goods and Services D irective with a
view to assess how it incor porates the “new” principle of gender equality. In particular, the
Goods and Servic es Directive addresses the complex relat ionship between the principle of
gende r equali ty and ins urance.  is paper concludes that although the Go ods and Services
Directives is potentially a very impor tant addition to the EU gender equality framework,
several issues, such a s the limited scope of application of the Directive, have signi cantly
undermined its potential .
