UK from the European C onvention of Human Rights.
is is fools’ talk .
Have such people been to Auschwitz, Treblinka, Dach au or any other death camp?
Have such people been to the KGB Museum in Vilnius?
Have they been to the torture ce lls?
Have they been to the death cha mber?
Have they at least read Art hur Koestler’s description of the death chamber process in
Darkness at Noon?
Have they been indicted or convicte d on the basis of evidence obtained by torture?
Have they read Asturia s’ El Señor Presidente, Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians or
Mur ak ami ’s Wind up Bird Chronicle to feel pain and degradation on merely reading
about tortu re?
Have they heard of Solzenitsy n? Do they know what the Gulag Archipelago was? In
that context do they know what g uilt by association was?
Have they been the vict ims of extraordinary rendition?
Have they been to Guantana mo?
If not, have they at least read Cherif Ba ssiouni’s seminal work, e Institutionalization
of Torture by the Bush Administration?
Have they been extrad ited to a State which applies the death penalty?
Have they been imprisoned for disag reeing with the State in the press?
