Labour law and practices on paid holidays continue to vary widely between different countries in the EU. Research by William M Mercer reveals that annual leave and public holidays, when added together, can range from 29 to 43 days depending on where you live.

The average leave and public holiday entitlement across all EU states is 36 days. Staff in Austria, Germany and Sweden get the most time off--43, 42 and 41 days respectively. At the other extreme, those in Belgium and the UK get only 31 days, and the Irish get just 29.

Apart from a profusion of different public holiday dates, there are also large discrepancies in the implementation of employment practices governing these days.
