Top salaries allow retail finance directors to shop around.

Finance directors in the retail industry receive some of the biggest salaries in the sector, according to William M Mercer's 2001 survey of pay, benefits and human resource policies in retail. Finance directors earn an average of 153,000 [pounds sterling] a year, compared with 96,000 [pounds sterling] for a buying director, 72,500 [pounds sterling] for a marketing director and just 30,250 [pounds sterling] for a store manager. Only retail chief executives earn more, with an average of 212,600 [pounds sterling]. Big-name retailers pay directors far more.
