addresses female prisoners’ families, particularly beyond their relationships with
their children. Codd criticizes ‘ongoing androcentrism’, which only discusses
women in terms of their relationships to men or their children, and emphasizes
the need for additional research covering many aspects related to the relationships
of female prisoners. In the f‌inal chapters, she details several promising approaches
to supporting prisoners and their families, and calls for a ‘transformative vision’
which challenges the use of imprisonment. She concludes, ‘If we as a society accord
family life any respect or value then to speak – and persevere in speaking – about
imprisonment in a critical voice is an imperative, not an option’ (p. 173).
Family members of prisoners and family dynamics are an important and often
overlooked aspect to incarceration. Codd provides a detailed and nuanced discussion
of issues related to families with incarcerated members and draws attention to what we
don’t yet understand. In addition to the early chapters, which will likely be of interest
to all, some sections of the book – such as the chapters on legal issues, promising
programs, or female prisoners and their families – may be of particular interest to some
readers. The book is likely to be of interest to students and researchers interested in
collateral consequences of mass incarceration, practitioners who work with incarcer-
ated populations or their families, and policy makers who want to be sensitized to an
often overlooked aspect of mass incarceration. Hopefully, researchers, policy makers,
and activists respond to her call to arms and give increasing attention to prisoners’
families. This book provides an excellent start to such a venture.
