This is the long-awaited third edition of a classic English-language article by article commentary on the provisions of what is now the Brussels Ia Regulation (Council Regulation 1215/2012 in full legal effect from 10 January 2015). The Brussels Ia Regulation, in common with previous Brussels I instruments, is concerned with the establishment of the jurisdiction of EU courts over civil and commercial matters, the recognition and enforcement of civil and commercial judgments and also with the enforcement of civil and commercial authentic instruments and settlements. The two previous editions of this book, each of which concerned the earlier Brussels I Regulation (Regulation 44/2001), were rightly regarded most highly by courts, practitioners and academics. This high regard was attributable to the accuracy and balanced judgment that the expert authors of each edition repeatedly demonstrated in offering explanation of the legislation and also of the torrent of sometimes controversial case law that has resulted from the Court of Justice of the European Communities and also the courts of the member states each attempting to apply the provisions of the Brussels I Regulation to those aspects of civil and commercial litigation that it governs across 28 member states. There is every reason to believe that this edition will become similarly indispensable to the practice of private international law.

The authorship of the book remains a collective undertaking with very distinguished authors allocated to cover different articles (or related groups of articles). The book predominantly features individual contributions from twenty-two different private international law experts drawn from legal systems across the EU. Though the passage of time has necessitated some adjustment to the cast of contributors, the extremely high standard of contributor set by the first two editions has, at the least, been maintained for the third edition. Particular mention must be made of the contributions of Professor Magnus and Professor Mankowski; each of whom has not only continued to contribute excellent original material, but also, collectively, to seamlessly and invisibly edit the other contributions so as to leave only excellence visible. The present edition is consequent upon the recasting reform of the 2001 Brussels I Regulation that, after considerable controversy, was delivered in its final text in December 2012.
