VINE is produced at least four times a year with the object of
providing up-to-date news of work being done in the automation of
library housekeeping processes, principally in the UK. It is edited
and substantially written by Tony McSean, Information Officer for
Library Automation based in Southampton University Library and supported
by a grant from the British Library Research and Development Department.
Copyright for VINE articles rests with the British Library Board, but
opinions expressed in VINE do not necessarily reflect the views and
policies of the British Library. The subscription to VINE is £17 per
annum and the period runs from January to December.
Articles for VINE are normally written by the Information Officer follow-
ing a visit to the organisation concerned, and are checked for accuracy
before they appear by people operating the system in question. VINE is
concerned with the whole span of library automation, not just the larger
projects,
and information on new projects or on developments within
established systems will be gratefully received. The Information Officer
also operates an informal information service on library automation
generally.
The abstracts at the top of all major articles are prepared by Gordon
Hynd, Information/Research Assistant in Perth and Kinross District
Council's Planning Department.

CLOCKING OFF
As many readers will know by now I will shortly be leaving the post of
Information Officer for Library Automation to join the Library System
team at Geac Computers Limited. Consequently, VINE will be acquiring a
new editor some time later this year.
Although this will not be my last issue of VINE (I have material for one
more which should go to press early in
June),
I would like to thank everyone
who has given me help and advice during my occupation of the editorial chair.
The hidden cost of VINE is the time and effort put into the preparation of
articles on the part of working librarians whose names appear at the foot
of many articles prefaced by 'Information supplied by1. My thanks go to
them for their forebearance in answering my questions during my visit to
their libraries - and for their patience in ploughing through the subsequent
first draft of the article, making sure that what finally appears in print
is complete and accurate. In recent months there has been a welcome increase
in the number of signed articles submitted for publication in VINE. I hope
that this side of VINE will continue to develop.
I would like to give my particular thanks to the other members of what might
be loosely termed VINE'S editorial staff. Wendy Simpson's contribution has
been immense - running the business and production side of the journal with
immense thoroughness, flair and cheerfulness. Gordon Hynd's abstracts have
proved extremely popular with VINE readers, and Rollo
Woods,
who has (perhaps
that should read 'bears') ultimate responsiblity for VINE and the rest of the
BLR&DD
project,
has always provided sound guidance and support. And corrected
my grammer. Thanks, too, to Sue Howley at BLR&DD for cheerily telling me what
I would get away with.
Although nothing is finally settled at the time of writing, VINE'S future looks
secure.
For the rest of this year, it will be produced by a caretaker editor
working for BLR&DD on a consultancy basis. At least two issues will be produced
on this basis - making five in all during this subscription and maintaining
our reputation for Stakhanovite exceeding of norms. In the meantime Wendy will
continue to run the office, which will consequently function entirely as usual.
It is expected that a new, salaried Information Officer will take up his or her
duties towards the end of the year and will have sufficient time to settle in
