INTRODUCTION
This review considers selected websites that
will be of interest to anyone involved in
the analysis or regulation of emerging mar-
kets around the world. In particular, it
concentrates on markets in Eastern Europe
including Russia, Asia, and Latin America.
GENERAL WEBSITES
Complinet
In the reviewer's opinion, this UK-based
website can rightly claim to be the leading
website currently available to anyone with
an interest in financial regulation. It sets
out to provide a comprehensive 'one-stop'
global 'online resource for compliance and
regulatory professionals', and largely suc-
ceeds.
One slight drawback is that it is a sub-
scription-based site, but non-subscribers
can arrange temporary access to check the
site out either through a no-obligation
demonstration or a free trial period. This is
well worth doing.
The website contains a vast database and
an excellent search facility is provided. The
site is kept up-to-date, and delivers a daily
information services highlighting breaking
financial news from around the world. Pre-
vious news stories can be easily retrieved
from the archives through the search facil-
ity. There is also a useful message board
system which allows specific questions to
be posted (on an anonymous basis if
required), and any responses are forwarded
by email. The site also provides some
online copies of a number of leading com-
pliance and regulatory journals and publi-
cations.
Overall, this is an excellent information
resource. Anyone involved or interested in
the area of financial regulation or compli-
ance will find this website extremely
useful.
Financial Times (FT)
An increasing number of newspapers and
other media are setting up interesting and
informative websites.
The FT site offers easy access to a very
large database, which contains deep back-
ground information on more than 11,000
companies worldwide, and is drawn from
archives containing more than 4 million
articles collected from over 3,000 publica-
tions.
It also features daily up-dated news
analysis.
Of particular interest are the FT special
reports and surveys. For instance, a recent
special report (9th February, 1999) looked
in depth at 'Asia in Crisis', while forth-
coming surveys include Russia (26th
April),
Indian banking and finance (28th
April) and Ukraine (10th May).
Overall, this site provides a valuable
news resource and is relatively easy to
access and use. There is a free subscription
process, although a small charge is made
for some articles.
