Abstract
I consider prospects for revolution in the 21st century, defined here as a thorough-going world
revolution that replaces the capitalist world-system with a feminist-inflected democratic socialism. An
overview of 20th century revolutions and more recent uprisings suggests distinctive contemporary
features, including women’s participation and the diffusion of feminist agendas, but also constraints. In
the face of reactionary social movements, and given the limits of ‘horizontalist’ politics, activists could
learn from past revolutionary strategies to build a powerful global alliance of progressive forces.

¿Qué es revolución en el siglo XXI? Hacia una revolución mundial
socialista-feminista
Resumen
En el presente texto considero las perspectivas de revolución en el siglo XXI, definida como una
completa revolución mundial capaz de sustituir el sistema mundial capitalista por un socialismo
democrático de modulación feminista. Un repaso de las revoluciones del siglo XX y otras
rebeliones más recientes deja ver unas características claramente contemporáneas, tales como
la participación de las mujeres y la difusión de las agendas feministas, pero también ciertas
limitaciones. Frente a los movimientos sociales reaccionarios, y dados los límites de las políticas
“horizontalistas”, los activistas podrían aprender de estrategias políticas pasadas de cara a la
construcción de una poderosa alianza mundial de las fuerzas progresistas.
