Present,

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 1 of the Zimbabwe Act 1979(a), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:—

Citation and commencement

1. This Order may be cited as the Zimbabwe Independence Order 1980 and shall come into operation on 21st March 1980.

Appointment of Independence Day

2. The 18th April 1980 is appointed for the purpose of section 1(1) of the Zimbabwe Act 1979 as the day on which Southern Rhodesia shall become an independent Republic under the name of Zimbabwe, and the unexpired provisions of the Southern Rhodesia Act 1965(b) shall cease to have effect.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order.)

This Order appoints the 18th April 1980 as the day on which Southern Rhodesia becomes independent as a Republic under the name of Zimbabwe.
