A&Es set to miss key target

This comes after a January which saw a 15% jump in the number of people attending A&E compared to the same month in 2023. Bosses told a meeting of the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) last week that - considered together - hospitals across the patch were "perilously close" to meeting the 76% target, but that, based on live data in the last week of March, it was likely to be missed

The Government and NHS England had set the target last year - downgrading the previous "operational standard" which had been that 90% of people should be seen within four hours.

Earlier in March, NHS England announced the top ten performing hospital trusts in the country when it came to A&E waits - and those to make big improvements between January and March - would be in for extra capital funding.

In February, NHS England data showed the Northumbria Healthcare

NHS Trust saw 85.8% of people within four hours - placing it in the top five nationally. The other standout performer in the wider region is the North Tees and Hartlepool trust, but most in our region fall below the 76% mark.
