5G on menu at new tech centre

The former Giraffe restaurant in the Newcastle shopping centre is to be turned into a 5G-enabled workspace that offers businesses the chance to test new products and access virtual reality technology

The Immersive Lab is being delivered by Digital Catapult with £700,000 funding support from the North of Tyne Combined Authority.

Organisers say the centre will host technology workshops, business challenges and demonstrations to help businesses understand 5G and then begin to innovate with it. Members of the public will also be invited to the lab to learn about 5G and immersive technology. It will also feature a Vodafone 5G standalone test bed and immersive technologies such as virtual reality, and will offer co-working areas, meeting rooms and event spaces.

The initial co-working space, delivered in partnership with Floe, will open this spring with the full 5G Immersive Lab to follow later in the summer. And while Vodafone will supply the communications tech, tech membership organisation Dynamo North East will help identify SMEs across the North of Tyne area to participate.
