£85m extra borrowing 'not commitment'

The issue - which saw a majority of councillors approve around £85 million extra borrowing in coming years - was raised again at a meeting of the full Calderdale Council

Coun Steven Leigh (Con, Ryburn), who had raised the issue recently at Cabinet, said he had not been satisfied with the response to his concerns about the proposed extra borrowing amount and servicing the borrowing when council finances were under severe pressure risked having to cut more services.

Coun Leigh said references to Calderdale's level of budget using for financing costs was, at five per cent, less than the average of comparative councils, which was 6.9 per cent, did not ease his fears:"Those nearest neighbours with the 6.9 per cent average includes two councils on the brink of financial disaster - surely basing on those figures is not an aspiration we should be looking to achieve."
