About time Arriva had competition

On Saturday, March 30 my wife left home at 13:45 to catch the 14:01 X18 bus to Morpeth. At 14:30 she telephoned me to let me know the bus had not arrived. I left the house and walked to the bus stop. My wife was still there. We waited together. The X18 is once per hour. The 15:01 bus also failed to arrive on time

At 15:15 we sighted the X20 going the other way to Amble. My wife decided to abandon her shopping trip to Morpeth. She crossed the road and went to Amble instead. With little else to do due to my injury, I sat and waited at the bus stop for a while. The X18 to Morpeth finally turned up at 15:27. One hour twenty-six minutes late.

I for one, avoid using public transport at all cost. It is the most unreliable and inconvenient way of trying to get from one place to another. Given Arriva have the monopoly on public transport in Northumberland, they must accept that the failure of service is theirs and theirs alone.

I expect Arriva may attempt to blame delays on the X18 and

X20 routes on the annual Easter parade of motorbikes which travels up the A1068 on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. That argument fails. The clue to why it...
