Actor shocked by 'savage knife' taken to lingusitics

The writer was in Huddersfield last week to deliver a guest lecture when he learned of plans that would spell the end of Linguistics teaching at the university

In a tweet to his 12 million followers on Twitter, Fry said: "So enjoyed my visit to Huddersfield University last week, where I delivered the @ Babelzine 2022 Lecture. But I was shocked to hear that a savage knife has been taken to the quite brilliant linguistics department there."

He then posted a link to a petition to help save it. The petition has been signed by around 3,000 people. Students and lecturers at Huddersfield thanked Fry for his support.

Dan McIntyre, who started the petition and is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at Huddersfield, tweeted his gratitude, writing: "Many thanks, Stephen, for your support - it's much appreciated."

Professor Lesley Jeffries, who also works in the department, replied: "It (was) a real pleasure to meet and host you Stephen. Your lecture and company gave us the energy we need for this struggle."

The petition says that 37 redundancies are being proposed in the School of Arts and Humanities.

It states: "On Monday 12 June 2022, the University of Huddersfield announced 37 redundancies in the School of Arts and Humanities.

"In Linguistics, two colleagues have received redundancy notices, with the remaining three invited to take part in a 'selection to stay' exercise in which they will be pitted against three colleagues from another subject area - for just three jobs. Under these plans, potentially every linguist at Huddersfield could be made redundant. The university has already stopped...
