They have made six "chunky" changes to the world's richest steeplechase to safeguard the animals

Ahead of the three-day race meeting which starts tomorrow, Aintree's clerk of the course Sulekha Varma, 39, said: "We have a moral duty to look after animals and that goes for if it's your pet dog or a racehorse."

Saturday's race has been moved forward from last year's 5.15pm start to 4pm to avoid the chance of rainsodden ground drying out, which would allow the horses to go faster.

The number taking part has been cut from 40 to 34 for more jumping space and the first fence has been moved 60 yards nearer the start to slow the horses down early on.
