The statuettes have been handed out, the red carpets rolled away, the fancy frocks have been returned to the fashion houses and the A-listers can eat carbs again

It all came to a close on Sunday with the Academy Awards and, when it came to fashion, it was quite a night.

In my humble opinion, the stars had saved the best 'til last.

Polka dots are an unusual choice for the Oscars - block colours and metallics tend to dominate - but I swooned when I saw Jennifer Lawrence make her way into the Dolby Theatre.

The 33-year-old's Dior couture gown apparently took 1,500 hours to make and was the epitome of old-school glamour.

Carey Mulligan may have missed out on an Oscar for her performance in the Bernstein biopic Maestro, but she took my award for best dressed.

The 38-year-old's black Balenciaga mermaid gown, with its tulle underlay, was a recreation of a 1951 design.

I am not normally a fan of black on the red carpet but, from the silhouette to the simplicity, like Carey's performance in the movie, the dress was understated and sublime.

Likewise Poor Things star Emma Stone, 35, was a portrait of a lady in her mint jacquard

Louis Vuitton number with its peplum detailing. Sadly Louis Vuitton's handiwork was no match for Ryan Gosling.

Coming up on stage to collect her Best Actress Oscar, Emma revealed her dress had 'broken' and that it had happened during the Barbie actor's barnstorming performance of his song Just Ken.

In these days of naked dresses and freeing the nipple, it struck me as interesting that the gowns winning me over at the weekend were some of the most demure we have seen all awards season.
