If the bulk of city centre shops have changed hands many times over the years, Northern Goldsmiths on the corner of Blackett Street has been a constant fixture. The location is a local landmark and one of the most photographed spots in Newcastle.

The gold Rolex clock adorned by the 'Venus' golden lady has been a popular meeting place for generations.

The store itself has sat on the corner of Pilgrim Street and Blackett Street since 1892 - the same year Newcastle United was formed just up the road.

It was once the head office for several other Goldsmiths stores around the region, before the company's expansion throughout the UK.

Back then, as a small family business founded by a Northumbrian called

Thomas Cooke, it supplied Newcastlemade watches and marine chronometers to the Admiralty during the First World War from its workshop.
